This video from Vsauce is where I learned the game and explaines the rules really well.
Super Tic-Tac-Toe Rules
- Starting Move: The first player can place their mark (X or O) in any of the 81 spaces on the 9x9 board, divided into nine 3x3 grids.
- Next Move: The position of the mark within the 3x3 grid dictates the 3x3 grid where the next player must place their mark.
- Small Grid Win: Winning a 3x3 grid (three in a row) counts as a mark on the corresponding spot in the larger 3x3 grid.
- Full Grid Rule: If directed to a full 3x3 grid, the next player can place their mark in any open space on the board.
- Game Win: The game is won by getting three marks in a row on the larger 3x3 grid.
- Draw: If all spaces are filled and no player achieves three in a row on the larger grid, the game ends in a draw.
Example
Starting Move:
- Player 1 places X in the right center of the middle 3x3 grid.
Next Move:
- Player 2 must place O in the center right 3x3 grid of the board (corresponding to the position of Player 1’s mark).
Continuing Moves:
- Player 2 places O in the top-left corner of the designated 3x3 grid.
- Player 1 must now place their mark in the top-left 3x3 grid of the board.
Winning a Small Grid:
- If Player 1 wins the top-left 3x3 grid, they mark the top-left position in the larger grid.
Full Grid Rule:
- If a player is directed to a full 3x3 grid, they can place their mark in any open space on the board.
Game Win:
- The game continues until a player achieves three marks in a row on the larger 3x3 grid, winning the game.
Draw:
- If all spaces are filled and no player achieves three in a row on the larger grid, the game ends in a draw.
